Phil Robertson Passes Away at 79
Phil Robertson, famed for his role in the A&E reality TV show “Duck Dynasty,” and known as a professional hunter and entrepreneur, has passed away at the age of 79. His son and daughter-in-law shared the news on social media platforms today. The head of the Duck Commander family was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in December of the previous year.
The family expressed their sentiments online, stating, “Today we celebrate that Phil Robertson, our beloved father, husband, and grandfather, has been welcomed into the Lord’s embrace. He often echoed Apostle Paul’s words, ‘Do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.'”
The family’s message further noted, “We’re thankful for the countless prayers and love from those touched by his life that was transformed by grace, his unwavering faith, and his eagerness to share the Gospel of Jesus with anyone willing to listen. We are grateful for his earthly journey and are committed to continuing his legacy of devotion to God and love for others until we reunite with him.”
Memorial Arrangements
The statement concluded with, “Many of you cherished him and were influenced by his life. We plan to hold a private ceremony initially, but will soon share details about a public celebration of his life,” referencing 1 Corinthians 2.
Last year, Robertson’s son, Jase, shared insights into his father’s health on their family’s “Unashamed” podcast, revealing, “He’s just not doing well and is really struggling.” He mentioned that his father was battling a severe blood disorder that was causing widespread issues in his body. Despite immense pain and memory challenges, Jase noted his father’s continued desire to participate in their Christian podcast, which debuted in 2019.
Phil Robertson’s Lasting Impact on Entertainment and Faith
In 2023, Robertson’s life story was adapted into a biographical film by Fathom Events titled “The Blind,” which became the company’s top-grossing release. Directed by Andrew Hyatt and penned by Stephanie Katz, the film portrays Robertson’s early struggles with demons and addiction in 1960s Louisiana and his path to redemption. The movie, featuring actors such as Aron Von Andrian and Amelia Eve, was a box office hit, earning over $17 million.
“Duck Dynasty” brought Robertson widespread fame during its 11-season run from 2012 to 2017, showcasing the tight-knit Robertson family and their multimillion-dollar hunting and outdoor recreation business. The show became a cultural phenomenon, setting several viewership records on A&E, including the highest-rated episodes and series. Despite a brief suspension in 2013 following controversial comments in a GQ interview, fan support led to his quick return to the show.
The family’s distinctive long beards and evangelical Christian beliefs were a signature part of the show, which consistently drew over 9 million viewers per episode in some seasons. The original series is now available on Fox Nation, which also introduced a sequel, “Duck Family Treasure,” featuring sons Jase and Jep Robertson in 2022.
Earlier this year, A&E announced a reboot titled “Duck Dynasty: The Revival,” set to premiere on June 1, focusing on Willie Robertson and his wife Korie as they manage their expansive family life. The announcement noted that Phil Robertson would not feature in the new series due to his health conditions.
Phil Robertson also co-authored a memoir, “Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander,” in 2013. He was a talented football player at Louisiana Tech University before choosing to focus on hunting, eventually earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education. A staunch conservative and Christian, he leaves behind his wife Marsha Kay, whom he married in 1966, five children, a brother, a daughter-in-law, and six grandchildren.
