There’s a notable buzz around the possibility of Bill Belichick, former head coach of the New England Patriots, stepping into the college football scene.
According to reports from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer and Pat Forde, Belichick has recently been in discussions with the University of North Carolina regarding their vacant head coaching position and is reportedly keen on taking on a role in collegiate football.
This speculation was further supported by a report from The Athletic’s Diana Russini on Saturday.
Russini stated, “Belichick is one of the top candidates for the position formerly held by Mack Brown—and these discussions are serious. If offered the position, it is believed that Belichick will accept it, based on sources close to him.”
At 72, Belichick is barely younger than Brown, who was let go by the Tar Heels last week after setting a record with 113 wins across two separate tenures. Belichick’s pivot towards college coaching is inspired by his unexpected experiences during last year’s NFL coaching changes, where his only interview was with the Atlanta Falcons, ultimately losing out to Raheem Morris.
Russini explained, “Belichick was disillusioned by the events of last January and the scant attention he received. He desires to lead a program autonomously, and the upcoming NFL coaching vacancies do not seem to offer that level of control.”
A move to Chapel Hill would also mean a potential reunion with his son Steve, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Washington under coach Jedd Fisch.
