The New York Jets are swiftly moving to secure a new head coach.
By Monday morning, infamously known as “Black Monday” in NFL circles, the Jets had already reached out to interview five prominent coordinators, according to several sources. The list of candidates includes Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik, and Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady.
Each of these coordinators is set to coach in the upcoming playoffs, which kick off this Saturday with the wild-card round. Matt Nagy will be available for interviews from Wednesday as the Chiefs have secured a first-round bye. The rest must wait until three days post their respective wild-card matches.
Arthur Smith was previously linked to the University of North Carolina’s vacancy in December before Bill Belichick, a former NFL coach, accepted the position. At that time, Smith appeared committed to staying with the Steelers, but it remains to be seen if he will pursue a head coaching opportunity instead.
Matt Nagy is also under consideration for the Jets’ job, and the New Orleans Saints have reportedly expressed interest in him as well. Nagy joined the Chiefs in 2022 after a challenging period as the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Vance Joseph consistently finds himself in the mix for head coaching roles each year, despite his nearly two-year tenure with the Broncos.
Joe Brady, while not yet a head coach in the NFL, has made a strong impression this season working with potential MVP quarterback Josh Allen. Bobby Slowik is similarly getting noticed as he enters the interview circuit for the first time.
