Titans Coach Shares Take on Potential No. 1 Pick Travis Hunter's NFL Position

At the NFL combine press conference, Tennessee Titans’ Brian Callahan shared his insights on Hunter’s prospective NFL career.

Exploring the Titans’ Strategy with the No. 1 Draft Pick

The Tennessee Titans hold a pivotal position with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Facing multiple team needs, they have several options: they could trade down to gather more assets, pick a potential star quarterback like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, or they might opt for a rare talent like Travis Hunter, who excels both as a cornerback and a wide receiver.

Tennessee has been quite secretive about their strategy since acquiring the top draft selection. Coach Brian Callahan spoke to the media in Indianapolis on Tuesday, as the scouting combine began, discussing the potential of selecting Hunter first overall.

Can Hunter Impact Both Sides of the Ball in the NFL?

There has been considerable discussion about whether Hunter, coming from Colorado, can replicate his collegiate success on both offense and defense at the professional level. Callahan is confident in Hunter’s dual capabilities, highlighting that comparing him to others with similar dual roles is challenging due to Hunter’s extensive experience in both positions.

“It’s very realistic. I think he’s a unique player,” noted Callahan. “There aren’t many players who have taken as many snaps on both sides of the ball. When you review his footage, it’s clear he plays both roles exceptionally well. I believe anyone you ask would agree that he has the potential to excel in both roles. We’ll see how best to utilize him if we decide to bring him on board.”

Identifying Hunter’s Primary NFL Position

While many view cornerback as Hunter’s primary strength at the professional level, Callahan suggested starting him in this position while gradually integrating him into the offensive lineup as he adjusts.

“You have to start somewhere, you need to establish a foundational role first. Then, explore expanding his responsibilities,” Callahan explained. “He would likely begin as a cornerback, and then we’d look for opportunities to include him in the offensive plays as he gains comfort and experience. But in my view, cornerback would be his initial role, though opinions may vary. I also see a significant role for him as a receiver.”

Hunter’s last season stats at Colorado were impressive; he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and scored 15 touchdowns on offense. On defense, he made 36 tackles, secured four interceptions, and defended 11 passes.
