Lakers Believed to Be Willing to Part With Three First-Round Draft Picks in Trades

Los Angeles seems ready to make a significant move for a high-caliber player.

Lakers in the Playoff Hunt

Currently, the Los Angeles Lakers are making strides in the playoff race with a record of 17-13, securing the sixth spot in the Western Conference. Under the guidance of new coach JJ Redick, stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis have been performing strongly. Despite their efforts, however, the team isn’t showing the same championship potential as teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder or the reigning champion Boston Celtics.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Lakers are prepared to leverage their draft assets to enhance their squad with the right addition. They’re looking for players who will not only mesh well with LeBron and Davis but will also remain key contributors in the foreseeable future under Coach Redick.

Charania elaborated on this strategy on an episode of *First Take*, saying, “The question is, how do we build around LeBron James and Anthony Davis? They’re eyeing potential sellers like Portland, Washington, Toronto, maybe Chicago. I’ve heard from sources within the Lakers’ front office that they’re willing to trade—they have three first-round picks available for trade. They seek players who can immediately impact the team alongside LeBron and Davis and can also contribute for an additional three to five years.”

Trade Assets and Potential Targets

The Lakers have a couple of first-round picks (2029 and 2031) that they can package in a single transaction, and they have the flexibility to trade their 2030 first-round pick in another deal, as detailed earlier by ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Additionally, they can include various pick swaps to make their offers more appealing.

Players like De’Aaron Fox, Zach LaVine, and former Lakers forward Brandon Ingram are on L.A.’s radar. These athletes fit the profile shared by Charania and could potentially become the pieces the Lakers need to contend more seriously.

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, set for February 6 at 3 p.m. ET.

Latest NBA Developments

With the trade deadline looming, the Lakers are clearly positioning themselves as active seekers of talent to bolster their lineup for a stronger playoff push and future seasons. Their willingness to trade significant draft capital indicates a commitment to winning now while also planning for life after their current stars age out or move on.
