Adam Silver Promises Change to Combat NBA's Three-Point Problem

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has acknowledged the widespread concern over the increasing reliance on three-point shooting in the league and has expressed his intent to implement changes.

In a recent discussion on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Silver was questioned about this trend, to which he confirmed that adjustments are on the horizon.

“In our role as guardians of the game, under the leadership of Joe Dumars heading our competition committee, we are set to make modifications and resolve these issues,” Silver remarked.

Silver elaborated, “How do we change it? I acknowledge that when offensive strategies across the league begin to mirror each other, we risk losing the unique identities and legacies of teams like Joe Dumars’ Bad Boys or the Showtime Lakers.”

He also noted the importance of not overstepping in adjustments which could potentially lead to a slower, more paint-focused style of play.

Highlighting the issue with a specific example, he mentioned that this season, the Boston Celtics are averaging a league-high 49.4 three-point attempts per game with a success rate of just 36.2%, which means that 54.4% of their total shots are from beyond the arc.

There has been a vocal response from fans and analysts alike, criticizing how the game’s flow is affected by the surge in three-point shots. Clearly, Silver is also viewing this as an issue.
