Netflix is intensifying its presence in Japan through a significant partnership with NHK, Japan’s national broadcaster. This collaboration introduces a slew of dramas to its platform, along with Netflix’s debut into Japanese variety television.
Starting next month, the streaming giant will roll out six NHK series, including the historical drama Strategist KANBE, the morning series Mampuku, as well as Descending Stories: A Life in Rakugo from Drama 10, The Science Club, Tokyo Salad Bowl, and the high-end drama My Family.
By 2027, Netflix plans to release a total of 20 NHK dramas. This package includes the yearly Taiga dramas, which were highlighted in the Global Breakout series by Deadline in 2024.
Netflix has a history of collaborations with top Japanese broadcasters to present captivating dramas both locally and worldwide. Now, the inclusion of NHK titles signifies a deepening of this relationship. Notable successes for Netflix Japan include Alice in Borderland and Last Samurai Standing.
