Netflix continues to embrace Japanese programming with enthusiasm.
The streaming giant has announced four new projects as part of its 2026 lineup, following a record-breaking period for viewership of Japanese content in the latter half of 2025.
The film lineup includes One Year to Live, Buy a Man by Hiroki Kazama. The anime selection features Sparks of Tomorrow, inspired by Hiro Yuki’s ’20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku’, while the TV offerings include the live-action adaptation of the webtoon Viral Hit and the unscripted auction show Doors Closed, Bids Open.
One Year to Live, Buy a Man adapts Toriko Yoshikawa’s 2021 novel. It tells the story of Yui Katakura, a 40-year-old single woman diagnosed with cancer. Given just a year to live, she radically changes her life approach, eventually buying the companionship of Sena, a financially struggling, pink-haired nightclub host, for 720,000 yen. This starts a unique and evolving relationship that blossoms into an unexpected romance.

The anime is slated for a July release.

Doors Closed, Bids Open, hosted by Matsuko Deluxe, is an underground auction show where invited bidders enter a secretive social club with no knowledge of the items up for auction. Produced by Imagine, Inc., Junji Nakayama and Shinichi Sakurai are the producers.
This surge in Japanese content on Netflix has been significant. During a digital press roundtable, Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix’s VP of Content for Japan, highlighted 2025 as a pivotal year with successful titles like Last Samurai Standing, Alice in Borderland Season 3, and Bullet Train Explosion.
Anime titles like Dan Da Man, My Melody & Kuromi, and Record of Ragnarok have also contributed to the growth in subscribers, with Sakamoto noting, “Today, half of all Netflix members worldwide watch Japanese anime, and total viewing hours have tripled over the past five years. For many global audiences, exploring anime via Netflix has become a routine part of their viewing habits.”
Additionally, Netflix has partnered with MAPPA, the studio behind Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu, to develop more anime content. Moreover, it has secured broadcasting rights to all 47 games of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, which will run from March 5 to March 18.
Other notable release dates include One Piece: Into the Grand Line on March 10, Steel Ball Run Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure on March 19, Sins of Kujo on April 2, Straight to Hell on April 27, and Soul Mate on May 14.
In 2026, Netflix plans to launch a total of 26 original series, films, and anime adaptations.
