Mike Myers Opens Up About His ‘SNL’ Protest In Support Of Canada: “Came From My Heart, And It Was Not About Me”

Equipped with dual citizenship, Mike Myers is reinforcing his stance from a recent Saturday Night Live episode where he declared “Canada is not for sale.”

During a fresh discussion with the New York Times, the seasoned comedian and actor, originally from Toronto but now mostly based in the U.S., shared insights into his bold declaration. He mentioned it was an act of unity with his fellow Canadians.

Myers, who stepped onto the SNL stage initially to mimic Elon Musk early in March and has since reprised the impression, hadn’t planned any political comments. Yet, as the evening progressed, his frustration grew with Musk’s joke about Canada not being a “real country” and President Donald Trump’s comments about making it the “51st state.” Consequently, during the show’s closing, Myers revealed a t-shirt with his message after unzipping his vest, simultaneously mouthing “elbows up,” referencing Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe’s known advice for dealing with tough opponents.

“The response was instinctive, stemming from my deepest sentiments and thoughts; it wasn’t about me—it was about supporting my homeland,” Myers explained to the publication. “I wanted to communicate to my compatriots that I stand with them.”

The star of Austin Powers further expressed, “What has transpired has truly wounded our spirits. We hold great affection for America and cherish our relationship. The current chaos is baffling to us.”

Following this, Myers participated in a campaign video with Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney. In the video, Carney probes Myers about his national allegiance. By the end, Myers is seen sporting a hockey jersey emblazoned with “Never 51.”

Expanding on his parody of Musk, the former SNL performer mentioned that the tech mogul’s political engagement contradicts his Canadian values and his belief in effective governance.

Myers concluded, “Fascism seeks to be feared, not mocked. Satire serves as a crucial mechanism to highlight that these actions are far from normal.”
