Marcello Hernandez Revives The Movie Guy For ‘SNL’s Weekend Update

During a memorable evening, Marcello Hernandez reprised his popular “Saturday Night Live” alter ego, The Movie Guy, known for his limited film knowledge during the Weekend Update segment.

Co-anchor Colin Jost brought Hernandez on to discuss the latest horror films, starting with the recent box office hit, Black Phone 2.

“Ah, Black Phone 2. Ring, ring! Hello? Oh, wrong number because I haven’t seen that one yet,” Hernandez joked.

Jost then asked about the year’s major genre film, to which Hernandez’s character again admitted, “Sure, Weapons. It was huge, Colin. It seems like everyone watched Weapons. Well, everyone but me.”

Hernandez continued, “I enjoy horror films because the title usually gives it away. Like Scream — everyone screams. Smile — everyone smiles. And Saw — everyone saw it, except me. I didn’t catch Saw.”

Identifying a genuine horror flick as “the one with Michael Myers,” Hernandez surprisingly wasn’t talking about Halloween, but rather Shrek, describing it as “every guy’s worst nightmare. Going to bed with a beauty and waking up asking, ‘How drunk was I last night?’ You get it, Colin.”

In a quick exchange, Jost inquired if he’d seen I Know What You Did Last Summer.

“So, what did I do?” Hernandez quick-wittedly replied.

And It? “Nope, missed that one too,” he stated.

But the highlight was when Jost asked if The Movie Guy had caught the acclaimed sci-fi horror Alien. “No, Colin, I’m an American citizen,” he responded, eliciting hearty laughter from the audience.

In other Weekend Update news, the segment welcomed newcomer Tommy Brennan, echoing the debut stand-up performance of former cast member Emil Wakim on SNL last season. Brennan humorously spoke about his Midwestern background, being one of eight siblings, and his recent move to New York City.

While the Cold Open avoided political themes, Jost and co-anchor Michael Che tackled the week’s headlines, cracking jokes about the release of the controversial GOP representative George Santos, the NYC mayoral debate between Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani, and former President Donald Trump’s recent comments about his chances of entering heaven.
