Bryan Cranston Says “Comedy Is Essential Right Now” Amid “Bombardment” Of Constant News Cycle

Bryan Cranston played a pivotal role in bringing back the Hulu/Disney+ series Malcolm in the Middle, not only for the joy of reuniting the screen family but also to highlight the vital role of humor in the current somber media landscape.

In a fresh dialogue with The Guardian, the star of Breaking Bad expressed that “humor is crucial at this moment,” particularly for viewers grappling with the relentless and often gloomy flow of news.

“He emphasized, “It’s not just important; it’s crucial. It serves as a respite from the relentless barrage of information. For those who keep the news channel on all day at home, the harm it causes might not be evident. It’s almost like filling your home with asbestos or living with continuous radiation exposure.”

In the four-part limited series Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, the family comes together for Hal (played by Cranston) and Lois’ (Jane Kaczmarek) 40th wedding anniversary. Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), the once clever kid now an estranged adult, is pulled back into the family dynamics with his own family in tow.

While most original cast members have returned (with the exception of Erik Per Sullivan’s Dewey, now portrayed by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark), Kiana Madeira joins as Malcolm’s partner Tristan, and Keeley Karsten takes on the role of his equally sharp-witted daughter Leah.

Beyond the revival series that premieres on April 10, Cranston is set to return in another beloved comedy role in The Studio Season 2, currently under production. In this, he revisits his character Griffin Mill, the shrewd and somewhat slippery CEO of Continental Studios.
