Jasmine Jobson Spills Secrets on Netflix’s ‘Top Boy’ Spinoff ‘Jaq’: A Wild Ride Ahead!

EXCLUSIVE: Jasmine Jobson has revealed that the upcoming Netflix spin-off series centered on her character, Jaq Lawrence, from Top Boy, is going to be a thrilling expansion of the universe initially crafted by Ronan Bennett.

Netflix disclosed this past week that Jobson will return to her role in this six-episode series that picks up after Top Boy wrapped up in 2023.

Tentatively titled Jaq, the production is slated for next year and signals a broader development of the Top Boy world, with Barry Keoghan reprising his role as the Irish gang leader Jonny McGee in the prequel, Jonny Boy.

In a chat with Deadline, Jobson shared that Jaq resumes five years after we last saw Jaq attempting to leave behind the drug scene of Summerhouse.

Now living in a coastal town, the plot thickens when a close associate disappears, drawing her back into the dangers she once fled.

“She’s about to dive into an intense situation, and while I can’t spill details about who or what is involved, just prepare for a wild ride,” Jobson commented.

“Now in a completely different setting, she’s pulled back into a tumult of events that might be more than she can handle. But we know she’s adept at navigating through chaos,” she added.

Following her BAFTA TV Award win for portraying Jaq, Jobson expressed her attachment to the character and her enthusiasm for a potential spin-off series.

Two years later, her vision is taking shape. She has been closely collaborating with scriptwriter Ryan Calais Cameron on Jaq and will also serve as an executive producer for the series.

Cameron, known for his work on Boarders and The Flatshare, will undertake his largest screenwriting project with Jaq. Jobson was captivated by his scriptwriting after viewing his play Afronauts.

“He’s deeply committed to the narrative and evolution of Jaq’s character. The concepts he’s introduced are fresh, edgy, and pertinent,” Jobson explained. “Once we began developing the project, it just clicked – it was undeniable.”

“Jaq is my creation, and a lot of my own traits, like loyalty and empathy, are reflected in her. So naturally, when Top Boy ended, I felt there were many more stories left to tell,” she continued.

The executive production team for Jaq includes Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind from Cowboy Films; Bennett from Easter Partisan Films; Calais Cameron and Jobson; Aubrey Drake Graham and Adel “Future” Nur from DreamCrew Entertainment; Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson from SpringHill Studios, a Fulwell Entertainment label.

Jobson’s next appearance will be in In The Shadows, a biographical boxing film about Ramla Ali, the first non-track and field athlete to represent Somalia at the Olympics. The film is set to premiere at the London Film Festival.

Additionally, Jobson will reappear in Season 2 of the Paramount+ series MobLand as Zosia. While Season 3 has not been officially confirmed, preparations are underway with the opening of a writers’ room for the Tom Hardy series.

When asked about her involvement in MobLand Season 3, Jobson expressed her hopes: “I’d love to continue, but it’s still uncertain. I haven’t yet seen any scripts, so it’s a matter of wait and see.”
