Chuck Lorre is venturing into the realms of CGI and science fiction with his new project.
The seasoned scriptwriter has unveiled his new venture, a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory named Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, during the Banff TV Festival. In his announcement, he also playfully critiqued Warner Bros.’ DC Studios.
Lorre is collaborating once again with Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady for this series, which is currently under development at HBO Max. Lorre disclosed that he, Prady, and The Avengers’ Zak Penn have already penned ten episodes, promising extensive use of CGI.
"This is a major shift for me. Normally, a big scene in my career involved two people sitting on a sofa sipping coffee. Now, we’re diving into a mix of sci-fi and comedy, and it’s all new territory for me. I’m stepping out of my comfort zone, eager to learn on the fly," he explained.

*Stuart Fails to Save the Universe* is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and is partnered with Warner Bros. Television.
The potential cast reunites some familiar faces from *The Big Bang Theory*, with Kevin Sussman possibly returning as Stuart. He might be joined by Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Stuart’s girlfriend, with Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie reprising their roles. While the show is still pending approval, these actors are tied to Warner Bros. Television with talent holding deals, poised to join the spinoff if it progresses.
Lorre shared a humorous anecdote about a recent squabble with DC Studios concerning their adaptation of *Green Lantern* into the series *Lanterns* for HBO. “We had a little tiff with them. They are very defensive about their *Green Lantern*. We took a jab at *Green Lantern* in our scripts, and they weren’t too happy. I mean, even as a kid I wasn’t impressed by *Green Lantern*,” he commented.
Lorre confessed his late arrival to the concept of intellectual property (IP) and emphasized his focus on humor over capitalizing on IP. “I’m not interested in just using IP for the sake of it. That’s nonsense,” he stated. “I aim to create a truly great show that’s thrilling and enjoyable to work on.”
He also revealed his personal TV preferences, which contrast sharply with his comedic creations. “When I’m unwinding at home, I tend to watch series filled with intense action, like *The Last Of Us*, *Adolescence*, and *MobLand*,” he shared, highlighting a taste for more graphic and dramatic content.
