Director James Cameron is considering expanding the Avatar universe to television with plans for an animated series and possibly a full-length animated feature.
In a recent interview with Empire, just before the December 19 premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron shared insights on potential new media for the Avatar franchise. Beyond its existing video game adaptations and a theme park experience at Walt Disney World, Cameron is discussing new narrative possibilities with Disney.
“I’ve proposed an animated anthology series set in the Avatar universe, featuring unexpected stories,” Cameron, the renowned director of Titanic, revealed. “There’s even potential for an animated feature, which could be either a streaming special or a cinematic release.”

Cameron pointed to projects like The Animatrix as successful examples of how a film’s universe can be expanded through animation, adding rich layers of backstory and side narratives. “We could delve into historical events on Pandora, such as the first human landing or the initial exploratory missions. The possibilities are vast,” he explained.
While busy with the sequel to 2022’s hit The Way of Water, Cameron admitted these animated projects are still in the conceptual phase.
“We’re in the early stages, gathering stories and exploring potential animators who are passionate about bringing these ideas to life,” he said.
A teaser for Fire and Ash was released last week, initially shown in theaters before The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The Avatar films have collectively earned $5.24 billion worldwide, with the original 2009 movie still holding the record as the highest-grossing film ever at $2.92 billion.
