In the early months of 2025, Fox News experienced a significant increase in both overall viewership and key demographic metrics throughout the first quarter and the month of March, contrasting with dips observed in its cable news competitors when compared to the previous year.
Conversely, MSNBC and CNN have both seen increases in their viewership numbers since Donald Trump took office, recovering from a downturn that occurred after the 2024 election results.
During the initial quarter of 2025, Fox News pulled in an average of 3.01 million viewers during primetime, marking a 46% increase from the previous year. In comparison, MSNBC attracted an average of 1.02 million viewers, experiencing an 18% decrease, while CNN attracted 558,000 viewers, a decline of 6%. In the key demographic of adults aged 25-54, Fox News saw a 63% increase to 380,000, whereas CNN saw a slight decrease of 1% to 121,000, and MSNBC dropped by 18% to 96,000.
Across the entire day, Fox News averaged 1.92 million viewers, up by 48%, whereas MSNBC saw a 27% decrease to 593,000, and CNN experienced an 8% decline to 428,000. In the 25-54 demographic, Fox News surged 58% to 247,000, while CNN decreased by 7% to 79,000 and MSNBC plummeted by 30% to 57,000.
Specifically in March, Fox News dominated primetime with an average of 3.13 million viewers, a 47% increase, while MSNBC saw a decrease of 10% to 1.18 million, and CNN slightly decreased by 2% to 591,000. In the 25-54 demographic for the same period, Fox News increased by 60% to 394,000, CNN held steady with a 2% decrease to 121,000, and MSNBC fell by 18% to 109,000.
In total day viewership for March, Fox News saw an increase of 43% to 1.87 million. MSNBC experienced a 24% drop to 629,000, and CNN decreased by 6% to 432,000. In the 25-54 demographic, Fox News jumped by 51% to 239,000, while CNN and MSNBC decreased by 7% to 78,000 and 29% to 60,000, respectively.
The most popular program on Fox News was “The Five,” which led the first quarter with an average viewership of 4.55 million and continued its lead in March with 4.3 million viewers. “Jesse Watters Primetime” was the top program among the 25-54 demographic, averaging 507,000 in the first quarter and 485,000 in March.
MSNBC reported that its weekday primetime viewership had surged by 96% since the inauguration and increased by 118% in the 25-54 demographic compared to the period following the election.
Meanwhile, CNN observed a 7% growth in its primetime viewership in March compared to the preceding month, and a 5% growth across weekdays.
Fox News announced that it achieved the highest-rated quarter in cable news history for weekday viewership.
