Golden Globes 2026 Audience Down 7% To 8.66M Viewers On CBS

The viewership for the 83rd Golden Globes, held in 2026, dropped to 8.66 million live and same-day viewers, as per Nielsen ratings reported by Deadline.

This represents a decrease of nearly 7% from the previous year’s 9.27 million viewers. Although these figures are an improvement over the 2023 broadcast’s historic low of 6.3 million, they are significantly lower than the 18.3 million viewers recorded in 2020.

Compared to other award shows, the 2026 Golden Globes did better than the 2025 Emmys, which drew 7.42 million viewers, but fell short of the 19.69 million viewers who watched the previous year’s Oscars. The upcoming Oscars, set for March 15, 2026, will provide a more direct comparison as they are expected to feature many of the same films.

The decrease in viewership was anticipated, especially since this year’s Globes did not benefit from an NFL playoff game lead-in. The NFL game on that Sunday, featuring the Buffalo Bills against the Jacksonville Jaguars, concluded well before the awards show started, giving viewers ample time to switch channels.

In 2025, the Globes enjoyed a boost from a later NFL game. While football lead-ins don’t guarantee high ratings, they usually provide a significant uplift.

On the night of the Globes, there was tough competition from two NFL Divisional Playoff games, with one game on Fox between the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles, and another on NBC featuring the New England Patriots against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite the viewership decline, online engagement for the Globes was robust, with Paramount reporting 43 million interactions, marking a 5% increase from the previous year and setting a new record.

The official “ET: Live on the Golden Globes Red Carpet” pre-show attracted 3.4 million live and same-day viewers, according to Nielsen.

The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the night’s big winner, securing the Best Picture — Comedy or Musical award and three other accolades. Director Paul Thomas Anderson won for both Best Director and Best Screenplay, adding to his wins at the previous weekend’s Critics Choice Awards. The movie also won the CCA for Best Picture, reinforcing its frontrunner status for the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.

Focus Features’ “Hamnet” claimed the Best Motion Picture — Drama award, and Jessie Buckley won Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her role in the film. Wagner Moura was a surprise winner of the Male Actor prize for his performance in Neon’s “The Secret Agent,” which also took home the Globe for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture.
