With a global count of over 57 million individuals affected by dementia, Chris Hemsworth is opening up about his family’s struggle with the condition.
In a sneak peek of National Geographic’s documentary titled Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, directed by Tom Barbor-Might, we see the Australian actor and his father, Craig, embarking on a motorcycle journey while dealing with Craig’s early-stage Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
“Dad and I are hitting the road, diving back into our history,” Chris reveals in the trailer released on Thursday. “He’s in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. I’m committed to doing whatever I can to assist him. It turns out, this journey might also aid in combating the illness.”
Available to Watch on Deadline
The star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe explained that “various locations immediately trigger memories” for his father as they traversed Australia for the one-hour documentary, which debuts on November 23 on National Geographic and will be available for streaming on November 24 on Disney+ and Hulu.
Beyond rekindling their relationship and fortifying his father’s recollections, Chris delves into the impactful science of social interaction with Craig, under the guidance of Dr. Suraj Samtani, a dementia expert and clinical psychologist at the University of New South Wales Centre for Healthy Brain Aging. Dr. Samtani has been working with the Hemsworth family for a year.
“Dad and I had always talked about going back to the Northern Territory, where we lived years ago, but we never managed to make the time,” Chris shared. “Recently, the idea of the road trip resurfaced with an urgent significance. The journey that followed was deeper, more emotional, and more unexpected than I could have imagined.”
