Aoife Hinds (from Dune: Prophecy and Normal People) and Billy Howle (known for The Perfect Couple and Under the Banner of Heaven) are set to lead in the BBC and A24’s new fantasy series called The Ministry of Time.

In the series, Hinds will portray the character Sophy, and Howle will take on the role of Commander Graham Gore. Production has started in various locations around London, as previously reported earlier this year. The BBC has stated that more casting details will be released soon.

Produced by A24, the series is adapted from Kaliane Bradley’s hugely popular debut novel, also titled The Ministry of Time. The series is being co-produced by partners including Amediateka, Binge from Australia, Crave from Canada, and Germany’s ZDF.

The narrative centers on The Ministry of Time, a new government agency that recruits ‘expats’ from various eras to explore the possibilities of time travel. Sophy, who has just been promoted within the civil service, finds out her new role involves assisting a time traveler – the Victorian-era polar explorer Commander Graham Gore – adjust to contemporary life as part of a highly classified Ministry project. As Sophy and Graham’s professional relationship blossoms, it turns into a deep, forbidden love affair, all while the dark and true motives of the Ministry threaten their safety.

“Looking back six years, if I could tell my past self about the journey of the polar explorer I’d just begun writing about, I believe she’d be utterly astounded,” shared Kaliane Bradley, the author of the novel.

The series, which spans six episodes, has been developed for television and scripted by Alice Birch. Birch also serves as an executive producer along with Aneil Karia and Jo McClellan for the BBC. The series is produced by Frances du Pille, and A24 holds the international distribution rights.
