Alex Bregman is still the most notable free agent available in MLB. Despite Houston’s recent acquisitions, including signing Christian Walker and trading for Isaac Paredes, the Astros are still keen on keeping the two-time All-Star on their team.
At the Astros’ FanFest this Saturday, General Manager Dana Brown, Manager Joe Espada, and veteran player Jose Altuve expressed their hopes to retain Bregman, acknowledging the challenges involved.
“It’s surprising that Bregman is still available at this point in the offseason,” Brown mentioned, according to MLB.com’s Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart. “We’ve had discussions, and that’s where I’ll leave it. It’s fascinating that he’s still on the market, but we are indeed in talks.”
Earlier in the offseason, Houston proposed a six-year, $156 million contract to Bregman, who has yet to sign. Despite the team’s recent moves, they are still open to Bregman accepting the offer, as reported by McTaggart.
To make space for Bregman, the Astros would need to reorganize their now-crowded infield and possibly offload some salaries.
“There are some obstacles, but I remain hopeful,” stated Espada via MLB.com. “He’s still available, and we’d love to have him back on the team.”
Espada reiterated last week that “the door’s still open” for Bregman as long as he remains a free agent. Altuve, who has played alongside Bregman for nine years, continues to advocate for his return.
“As his teammate, I want him back,” Altuve said, also via MLB.com. “He’s a crucial part of our team and would definitely enhance our performance if he stays, so we’re really hoping he will.”
Altuve also mentioned he’s willing to shift from second base to left field to accommodate Bregman’s return.
Other teams, including the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, remain interested in signing Bregman, as reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Despite the complications introduced by their offseason activities, the Astros seem prepared to do whatever is necessary to secure a deal, should Bregman be willing to return.
At 30 years old, Bregman finished the 2024 season with a strong performance, earning his first Gold Glove award. He recorded a .260/.315/.453 batting line with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs last season.
