A handful of demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and holding signs condemning genocide temporarily disrupted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York this year.
The unidentified group breached the security barriers at the corner of West 55th Street and Sixth Avenue, where they positioned themselves on the pavement and started chanting “Free Palestine.” They obstructed the progress of the large Ronald McDonald balloon. The signs they placed on the ground declared “Don’t celebrate genocide” and called for an “Arms embargo now.”
New York City Police officers promptly intervened to disperse the demonstrators. According to WABC, twenty-one individuals involved in the protest were detained and are being held in custody. Footage of the disruption quickly spread across social media platforms.
This marks the second consecutive year that demonstrators with Palestinian flags and anti-genocide banners have caused a pause in the parade. Last year, pro-Palestinian activists jumped the barriers and glued themselves to Sixth Avenue. During the previous year’s parade, a participant from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts also displayed a Palestinian flag on their float.

At an event prior to Thanksgiving, the Mayor of New York City issued a warning to potential protesters to steer clear of the parade, labeling any disruptors as “grinches.”
“I want to take this opportunity to address those grinches thinking they can disrupt our parade; it simply won’t happen,” said Adams. “Just as we did last year, we will handle anyone trying to interfere with the parade swiftly and decisively.”
In a significant development aimed at quelling violence in the Middle East, a ceasefire has been brokered to conclude 13 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. President Joe Biden announced this agreement Wednesday afternoon.
“Effective at 04:00 tomorrow local time (02:00 GMT on Wednesday), hostilities along the Lebanese-Israeli border will cease,” stated Biden. He emphasized that the agreement is intended to lead to a “permanent cessation of hostilities.”
The ceasefire began overnight on Wednesday as scheduled. However, military operations by Israel in Gaza are ongoing, with at least 44,330 fatalities and 104,933 injuries reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
