“Mourinho”: Netflix Unveils Gripping Doc on Iconic Soccer Coach, Sets Worldwide Premiere!

The upcoming Netflix documentary series featuring iconic soccer coach Jose Mourinho is set to premiere worldwide on August 11.

Today, coinciding with his return as the head coach of Real Madrid, a preview clip was released showcasing Mourinho in his element. He exudes pride as he walks the camera crew through his personal collection of memorabilia, including a duplicate Premier League trophy and signed gear from soccer legends Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho reflects on his career, stating, “I began collecting victories in 2003, and my most recent championship was in 2022. That’s two decades of success. That’s why you’re interested in my story. Documentaries aren’t made about people who don’t win.”

He also attempts to downplay the nickname ‘The Special One,’ which he famously adopted in 2004 after moving to Chelsea from FC Porto, the reigning European champions. “I don’t walk around believing I’m special,” he clarifies to the film crew. “’The Special One’ was just a catchy phrase some folks in England coined for me.”

The conversation takes a humorous turn when the interviewer points out, “It’s funny you say that while you’re standing in front of a wall-sized portrait of yourself,” prompting a surprised look from Mourinho.

Filmed over the course of two years, Mourinho delves into the coach’s meteoric rise, starting with his surprise Champions League win with Porto, his disruptive presence in the English Premier League with Chelsea, and subsequent victories with Inter Milan, including another Champions League title.

His tenure at Real Madrid is highlighted by his confrontations with Barcelona, led by Lionel Messi, and includes a La Liga title. He later returned to Chelsea for another league title and went on to manage Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Roma, each with varying success, and most recently Turkey’s Fenerbahçe and Portugal’s Benfica before his latest appointment at Real Madrid.

The documentary is part of Netflix’s Untold series, which has profiled figures like footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

It features interviews with numerous football stars including André Villas-Boas, Claude Makelele, Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard, Iker Casillas, Javier Zanetti, John Terry, Luis Figo, Marcelo, Marco Materazzi, Massimo Moratti, Petr Čech, Peter Kenyon, Ricardo Carvalho, Rui Faria, Sami Khedira, Samuel Eto’o, Alex Ferguson, and Zlatan Ibrahimović.

The documentary is produced by Ventureland, with John Battsek (Beckham) and Miles Coleman (99) at the helm. Joe Pearlman (Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now, Bros: After The Screaming Stops) directs the feature.
