CAUTION: This article reveals key plot points from The Last Thing He Told Me Season 3 Episode 3.
The third installment of Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me, called “Reunion,” aptly fits its name, starting with Hannah’s emotional reconnection with her mother, Carol, portrayed by Rita Wilson.
Following a heart-pounding incident, Hannah, played by Jennifer Garner, hurriedly takes her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) and embarks on a meticulously planned escape up the coast. Advised by Quinn Favreau (formerly Campano) to seek refuge in a place where they wouldn’t be recognized, they find sanctuary at Carol’s home in Arizona.
“This episode was a different rhythm for us. It started with intense action, then suddenly, we slowed down. Miguel Arteta directed this episode. I’ve collaborated with him on two films and multiple other projects over the years,” Garner shared with Deadline about her experience with the Yes Day director. “Miguel is a longtime friend and one of the directors I trust the most. I was confident in his vision and knew he would capture the authenticity of every moment.”

Hannah, primarily raised by her grandfather after her mother followed her father into the world of photography, learned the craft of wood-turning from him. Despite their closeness, flashbacks reveal Hannah’s discomfort whenever Carol made unexpected visits.
“Having Rita Wilson join us as Carol was a highlight of the season. She’s widely recognized for Sleepless in Seattle. Rita has appeared in numerous roles, particularly comedies, but she’s also a talented musician, artist, and mother,” Garner commented on her costar. “Rita brings a real depth to her roles. Her presence on set was immensely grounding.”
At first, neither Hannah nor Bailey warms up to Carol. Bailey’s initial perceptions are challenged, and even Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who reappears in Hannah’s life, notices similarities between Hannah and Carol, humorously hinting at kicking him out after his long absence.

“Rita brought her artistic sensibility and a profound depth to her role, portraying a mother who reunites with her daughter after many years,” Garner continued. “It’s crucial for the story to shed light on why Hannah appears so reserved and emotionally guarded: she practically raised herself without her mother, harboring a mix of anger, hurt, and sadness all centered around this woman.”
The return of Owen, tracing Hannah through a tracking device hidden in a locket, adds complexity to the episode’s theme of reunion.
“I adore these books, these characters. The romance between Owen and Hannah is something I cherish, and I envisioned a scene where she rushes into his arms to a soaring soundtrack. However, that wouldn’t have been truthful,” Garner explained. “Deep down, Hannah might have wished for that, but the betrayal was too profound, the wounds too deep. Whether their relationship can survive remains uncertain.”
