By the age of 26, Jayson Tatum, forward for the Boston Celtics, has already built an impressive career portfolio, including six All-Star selections, four All-NBA mentions, and winning the 2024 NBA championship.
Despite his on-court success, Tatum often finds himself overlooked in discussions about the “face of the NBA.” Although widely recognized as the top player on what many consider the best team in the league, factors like his lower global recognition and the overall depth of the Celtics roster may play a role in this oversight.
In an article by Michael Lee from The Washington Post published Tuesday, Tatum expressed frustration over the lack of acknowledgment he receives.
“If you stripped away the name and face from all my achievements and just presented them as those of Player A at age 26, the conversation around me would be quite different,” Tatum remarked.
This hypothetical scenario highlights Tatum’s impressive accomplishments, which, according to Basketball Reference, already give him a 62% chance of making the Hall of Fame—a higher percentage than some other stars like Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Despite such achievements, Tatum’s exact standing among NBA legends remains up for debate.
“Did I win a championship? Yes. Have I won gold medals? Yes. Have I consistently contributed to winning seasons and been selected for the first team All-NBA? Those are solid, undeniable facts,” Tatum stated. “Being the face of the NBA is always subject to debate, but I believe I’ve checked all the boxes.”
