Frankie Muniz has been keeping details about the much-anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reboot under wraps. However, the actor, who has since become a NASCAR driver, hinted that the four-episode series will deliver some unexpected twists for viewers.
During his recent appearance on the Lightweights Podcast with Joe Vulpis, Muniz suggested that the reboot will provide a satisfying conclusion for Malcolm, the main character who navigated the complexities of adolescence in a boisterous and often clueless family over the show’s original seven seasons.
“I believe the audience will be genuinely surprised by where each character ends up and how the story unfolds. But remember, it’s just four episodes,” Muniz remarked. He explained that the original idea, which he and co-star Bryan Cranston had been pondering for a decade, was to create a two-hour movie. “It’s challenging to condense 20 years of experiences into four 30-minute episodes, but I think fans will be pleased with what we’ve developed.”
Now primarily focused on his racing career, Muniz mentioned that the production schedule was arranged around his NASCAR commitments. The insurance costs for his participation were significant due to his racing schedule, which included five races during the shooting of the series.

“Filming this reboot was the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had. I loved it more than I could have imagined,” he shared. Muniz noted that the project wrapped up in May and since then, his hectic schedule has kept him away. “I’ve barely been home, maybe 12 days since the start of the year. It’s been wild. I plan to reconnect with everyone from the cast next week.”
Muniz, who has received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, also reflected on how naturally the cast fell back into their familial roles on set.
The original show, which won seven Emmys, a Grammy, and a Peabody Award during its run from 2000 to 2006, was celebrated for its unique approach to comedy. In the reboot, Malcolm is now an adult with a wife and daughter, but finds himself entangled in his parents’ chaos once again during the celebration of Hal (played by Cranston) and Lois’s (Jane Kaczmarek) 40th wedding anniversary.
Reflecting on the Disney+ limited series restart, Muniz said, “It was an incredible journey. It felt like stepping back into Malcolm’s chaotic world, but with even more love and craziness. Laughing with the cast, meeting new characters, and creating fresh memories was surreal. It all went by in a flash, a series of perfect moments that I wished could last forever.”
