Nadia Farès Dies: ‘The Crimson Rivers’ Actress Was 57

Nadia Farès, a Moroccan French actress renowned for her role in the 2000 film The Crimson Rivers, tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 57 after being found unconscious in a swimming pool last week, leading to a coma from which she did not recover.

Her daughters, Cylia and Shana Chasman, announced her death due to cardiac arrest in a statement released via Agence France-Presse.

“With profound sorrow, we share the passing of Nadia Farès this Friday. While France mourns the loss of a magnificent talent, we grieve the loss of our mother,” the statement from her daughters read.

Born in Marrakesh on December 20, 1968, Farès rose to fame with her breakout performance in the Mathieu Kassovitz-directed conspiracy thriller The Crimson Rivers, acting alongside Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel.

Growing up in Nice and later moving to Paris, Farès embarked on her film career with her debut in the 1992 film Les amies de ma femme (My Wife’s Girlfriends). Her career included roles in the action movie War featuring Jet Li and Jason Statham, and the horror film Storm Warning.

In 2009, Farès took a break from acting to move to the U.S. with her husband, American producer Steve Chasman. She returned to the screen in 2016 in the Netflix drama series Marseille. Following her separation from Chasman in 2022, she returned to France.

According to Le Monde, Farès was preparing to direct and write her first feature film, an action comedy, with Studio TF1 scheduled for production this coming September. “After relentless hard work, self-reflection, and persistence, I’ve assembled a fantastic team,” she told the French celebrity and women’s magazine Gala in an interview earlier this year.

Farès had previously disclosed her health struggles, including a significant aneurysm in 2007 that necessitated immediate brain surgery, followed by three heart surgeries over four years.

Le Figaro reported that Farès was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool at a private club on Rue Blanche in the 9th arrondissement on April 11. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene to administer CPR before she was rushed to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital and placed into a medically induced coma.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her injuries remains ongoing, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage from the location, as reported by Midi Libre. No criminal activity has been identified at this stage.

Cylia Chasman has posted a heartfelt tribute to her mother on social media, which can be viewed below:
