Benito Skinner Teases ‘Overcompensating’ Season 2 Has “A Maturity To It” & “Feels More Queer” As Benny Ventures Out Of The Closet

Benito Skinner gives a sneak peek at the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s Overcompensating.

This semi-autobiographical comedy-drama focuses on the main character, a closeted athlete who strikes up a friendship with the outsider Carmen (played by Wally Baram) in their first year of college. Skinner hinted that the new season dives deeper into LGBTQ+ themes as Benny explores more of his identity outside the closet.

“We’ve kept the essence of the show while elevating it in many aspects. There’s a new level of maturity,” the creator shared in a recent interview with People. “I’m thrilled about it — and it’s definitely edgy.”

The creator-actor expressed pride in the upcoming season, which is currently in production: “I’m extremely proud of these scripts — I poured my soul into them. So far, it’s shaping up to be exactly what I envisioned. Everyone has really hit their stride, and the humor is sharper than ever.”

Discussing the second season, Skinner mentioned he aims to capture the same “specificity” that connected with viewers in the first season. “I’m pushing to see how truthful we can get without making us all too uncomfortable,” he explained, concerned about family reactions like, ‘What if my aunt sees this?’”

After its debut on the Amazon streaming service in May last year, the show’s future was uncertain for a while before finally getting the green light for renewal in September.

In the first season, Benny, with advice from his older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her legendary campus boyfriend (Adam DiMarco), navigated challenging hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. The narrative explored the lengths to which we go to mask our true selves. The season ended dramatically with Benny accidentally discovering Carmen kissing his crush, Miles (Rish Shah), leading to an awkward moment where Benny is inadvertently outed to his sister.
