Bad Bunny Sends Uplifting Message To Latino Community In ‘SNL’ Monologue Following Right-Wing Furor Around Super Bowl Halftime Show

During his second hosting gig on Saturday Night Live and his fourth visit to Studio 8H, global music icon Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, delivered a powerful message to his Latino fans worldwide. Following a conservative backlash regarding his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime performance, the three-time Grammy winner declared that the contributions of Latinos in the U.S. could not be “diminished or erased.”

Bad Bunny kicked off his monologue with a joke, saying, “I think Marcello is worried that Lorne might have a new favorite Latino,” as the camera shifted to show cast member Marcello Hernandez in the audience, who responded with a simple, “I am.”

The beloved trap-pop musician mentioned he wouldn’t be taking on additional roles during the night’s show because he just concluded a 31-night stint in Puerto Rico, performing three-hour sets. He joked about needing a “break” and humorously referred to his well-known knee injury as “complicated choreography.”

After his Caught Stealing co-star Austin Butler became a sensation for attending one of his concerts, where he admitted to being under the influence of edible gummies, Bad Bunny commented that several celebrities had been “on drugs” at his performances. He playfully nicknamed Jon Hamm “Juan Jamón,” just before the camera revealed the Mad Men star in a surprise cameo.

Shifting the topic to the Super Bowl, Bad Bunny expressed his excitement, joking, “I’m very happy, and I think everyone is, even Fox News.” The episode then showed edited clips from the conservative network, humorously claiming, “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician. He should be the next president.”

More earnestly, the versatile artist highlighted the support of his fans for the NFL’s decision, switching to Spanish amidst loud cheers to acknowledge, “especially all the Latinos and Latinas around the world, and here in the United States, all those who have paved the way, achieving more than I have, showing that our contributions to this country cannot be taken away or erased.”

“And if you didn’t catch that,” he added playfully, “you’ve got four months to learn.”
