The 3-Ingredient Puerto Rican Snack I Can’t Stop Making (It’s Bad Bunny’s Favorite)

While watching the Super Bowl with my family, I found myself more captivated by the halftime performance than the actual game. As a cookbook writer and someone who once called New York home, I was particularly delighted to see the halftime stage feature La Marqueta, a well-known bodega. This detail piqued my curiosity about what international music sensation Bad Bunny might enjoy eating offstage.

During a quick search, I stumbled upon a TikTok interview with Iván Emilio where Bad Bunny, speaking in Spanish, revealed his fondness for munching on Ritz crackers topped with Queso de Papa (a type of mild cheddar), often paired with a slice of ham, creating a Puerto Rican twist on the classic Ham & Cheddar Lunchables. Emilio also hinted at a combination involving Ritz, cheese, and guayaba, which typically refers to guava jelly.

Both of these combinations are classic Puerto Rican snacks, or entremeses típicos. Intrigued by the simplicity and potential deliciousness of these bites, I decided to try making them myself. My pantry was already stocked with Ritz crackers, ham, and cheddar cheese. Emilio’s mention of guava jelly captured my imagination, prompting me to pick up a jar from a local Asian supermarket.

Creating the Snack at Home

This Puerto Rican snack is incredibly easy to assemble. Simply take the crackers out of their packaging, arrange them on a plate, and top each one with a slice of cheddar cheese—cut thicker than your typical pre-sliced cheese for added indulgence. Then, add a slice of ham to each cracker for that extra touch of savory flavor. The preparation is straightforward, yet the result is extremely satisfying.

To finish, I added a dollop of guava jelly on top, and it quickly became my favorite variant. The sweet guava jelly complemented the salty flavors perfectly, creating a delightful balance. If guava jelly proves hard to find, I believe apricot or another fruit jam could serve as a suitable alternative.

I must admit, Bad Bunny was onto something. This snack is indeed something I could happily eat all night long. It’s the type of treat that keeps you coming back for more, much like playing your favorite song on repeat.

Note that Bad Bunny specifically mentioned a preference for Queso de Papa, a cheese that gained fame when Pope John Paul II enjoyed it during his visit to Puerto Rico, earning it the nickname “Pope’s Cheese.” Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find this specific cheese locally in Washington, but you might have better luck finding it in your area.
