Ambika Mod Says She Still Gets Auditions For Roles Like “The Rookie Cop” Who Supports The “Two Interesting White Leads” Despite ‘One Day’ Success

Despite her notable performance in One Day, Ambika Mod continues to receive auditions that mainly serve to enhance the “fascinating white leads” of projects, she disclosed.

In a detailed conversation with The Times U.K., the actress from This Is Going To Hurt talked about the contrasting opportunities presented to her and her co-star Leo Woodall, a disparity she has openly discussed before.

“Absolutely not. It’s just the reality,” she responded when asked if she regrets her previous comments on the issue. “I’ve said these things to Leo directly… It’s not personal at all. It’s about the industry and societal norms. Typically, you’re only considered for roles that stereotype brown people—like a doctor, a dentist, or a police officer,” she explained.

She mentioned that her auditions aren’t limited to these types, adding, “Even in the last eighteen months, I’ve been asked to try out for the part of a novice police officer who delves into the lives of two intriguing white protagonists.”

Mod also revealed that she initially declined to audition for One Day several times as the role seemed implausible and “almost too good to be true.” Reflecting on her experience post-show, the Black Bag actress said, “I’ve encountered some really distasteful comments about myself online, which I believe are rooted in racism and misogyny. I cherish being unconventional… I’m not your typical leading lady, and that’s my strength.”

Earlier this year in an interview with Deadline, Mod discussed the implicit expectation to represent all South Asian individuals and expressed her desire to be recognized for her artistic merit rather than her ethnicity.

“Conversations about my white co-star often focus on his performance and the quality of his work. But with me, it’s frequently about how groundbreaking it is that I’m brown, and how revolutionary the casting was. But what about my performance and my work?” she expressed.

And I’ve had 26 guest stars and still read for 2 line co stars. At least you’re getting auditions. I usually have had 50 tapes by August but only had 14 this year. Be grateful you’re even being asked to read.
