WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Yellowjackets, Season 3 episode ‘Dislocation’.
Sophie Nélisse’s character Shauna in Yellowjackets has endured tremendous hardships, yet in the latest season, she finds an unlikely ally.
At the premiere of Season 3 of the popular Showtime series on Thursday, Nélisse discussed with Deadline the surprising development between Shauna and her teammate Melissa (Jenna Burgess) in episode 2 titled ‘Dislocation’, which is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
“The relationship between them is quite complex, and I believe Shauna herself hasn’t fully grasped it,” said Nélisse. “She’s uncertain about her desires. It seems she’s at a juncture needing profound emotional support—to be loved and reassured that she’s not to blame. Melissa serves that role as she truly sees Shauna for who she is, embracing her flaws and all.”
Nélisse added, “However, Shauna is overwhelmed by guilt and self-loathing. It’s hard to extend love to others when you lack self-love. Therefore, I don’t think she can fulfill Melissa’s emotional needs in return. Instead, Shauna might just manipulate her as another piece in her complex game.”

While the show’s creators, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have kept silent about the role of new cast member Hilary Swank this season, there is widespread speculation among fans that the two-time Oscar winner will portray the adult version of Melissa. This adds layers of intrigue, especially as ‘Dislocation’ hints that the adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) might be dealing with a stalker.
Nélisse explained that her portrayal of teen Shauna this season is “intensely dark and unstable,” as she is “at a point where she feels she has nothing left to lose” following the tragic deaths of her baby and her best friend Jackie (Ella Purnell).
“It’s tough for her because she feels immensely guilty about these tragedies, despite not being directly at fault,” Nélisse continued. “Lottie tries to guide the group in a direction that honors these losses in a positive light, but Shauna isn’t ready to move on and doesn’t view it the same way. The loss of her baby is too personal for her, a grief she isn’t prepared to share, and she just wants to experience this mourning privately.”
