As someone who adores caffeine, I’m always exploring new twists to enhance my morning coffee. This summer, I’ve experimented with sparkling coffee and tried adding a splash of Coca-Cola to my iced coffee, which surprisingly, was quite delicious.
By now, I’ve practically become the unofficial coffee expert at Simply Recipes. Over the last weekend, I discovered a hidden treasure in an old cookbook belonging to my grandmother. It’s an Austrian beverage named Einspänner, which has quickly captivated my attention. Traditionally served hot, I’ve found that it’s equally delightful over ice—a refreshing variation that works wonderfully.
Exploring Einspänner
Einspänner is crafted with just two components: robust black coffee and a generous topping of sweetened whipped cream. It’s a sweet, creamy concoction that makes your regular coffee shop visit seem overpriced by comparison.
The name Einspänner translates to “one-horse carriage,” a nod to its origin with coach drivers who needed a drink that could be easily managed with one hand while the other hand kept the reins. The original serving vessel was a handled glass mug, perfect for on-the-go sipping.
Today, I find the Einspänner perfectly suits my needs too, especially during commutes where I balance my coffee in one hand and navigate the steering wheel or clutch the subway pole with the other.
How to Craft Your Own Einspänner
Creating an Einspänner can be done using either drip coffee or espresso, depending on what equipment you have available. Both methods are straightforward and swift.
I happened to have whipped cream in my fridge (leftover from making strawberry shortcake), so putting it all together took less than a minute. Even if you’re starting from scratch, the process is impressively simple.
Creating Whipped Cream
If you need to make whipped cream, simply whisk one-half cup of cold heavy cream with one tablespoon of powdered sugar using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed. Beat until soft peaks form, aiming for a smooth, pillowy texture that holds its shape well on a spoon.
Option 1: Using Cold Brew or Strong Coffee
Start by filling a tall glass or beer stein with ice. Pour about one cup of cold brew or cooled, very strong black coffee over the ice. The coffee should be rich and concentrated enough to balance the sweetness of the cream.
Top it off with a generous dollop of sweetened whipped cream and serve immediately—there’s no need to stir.
Option 2: Using Espresso or Espresso-Style Coffee
If you own an espresso machine, pull two shots of espresso directly into a tall mug filled with ice. This method, inspired by Japanese iced coffee techniques, preserves the espresso’s flavor and cools it instantly.
The ice may melt slightly when the hot espresso is poured over it, but if you prefer an extra cold drink, just add a few more ice cubes. Finish by topping it with a generous spoonful of sweetened whipped cream. Enjoy your Einspänner right away.
