In a hastily arranged press conference on Sunday evening, Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Alan S. Hamilton announced that an investigation into two fatalities at the Brentwood residence of Rob Reiner is currently underway.
Relatives have verified that the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rob Reiner and his spouse Michele Singer Reiner were found deceased at their home earlier that day. It was reported that the method of death was stabbing, though Deputy Chief Hamilton did not confirm these details at the press conference, referring to it as a “death investigation” and stating that the identification of the deceased would be confirmed by the coroner.
Throughout the night, Hamilton answered questions from the press but withheld further specifics, including who alerted the authorities and whether interviews with relatives were taking place. He also did not label the inquiry as a murder investigation, even though the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division was involved.
Watch on Deadline
Hamilton mentioned that more details would be released once a search warrant was obtained to enter the crime scene, with the investigation anticipated to extend over the next few days.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a call regarding an “incident” at the Reiner’s home on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue around 3:40 p.m. PT. They arrived at the large Brentwood property shortly after, with LAPD arriving within the hour. The incident was initially described by authorities as a “family incident.”
During the media briefing, Hamilton chose not to comment on speculation that the Reiners’ daughter, Romy Reiner, made the emergency call, and he dodged a question about a report from People suggesting that the couple had been fatally stabbed by their son, Nick Reiner.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed in a statement: “The passing of Rob and his wife Michele is a profound loss for both our city and the nation. Rob Reiner’s contributions have had a significant impact on American culture and society, enhancing numerous lives through his artistic and advocacy efforts. An esteemed actor, director, producer, writer, and active political advocate, he consistently used his talents for the benefit of others. I am personally devastated by the tragic deaths of Rob and Michele, whom I respected deeply. Among his many achievements, Rob was instrumental in founding First 5 California, a critical initiative funded by tobacco taxes that supports early childhood development programs. Both he and Michele were staunch supporters of early childhood development and marriage equality, actively working to defeat Proposition 8. They were staunch advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. I extend my gratitude to all first responders who attended this tragic scene. The investigation is ongoing, and my thoughts are with everyone who loved Rob and Michele.”
