Sam Claflin Opens Up About Body Dysmorphia Around Shirtless Scenes: “I’m Incredibly Insecure”

Over 15 years into his acting career, Sam Claflin still faces moments of self-doubt whenever he watches his performances on screen.

The actor, known for his Golden Globe-nominated performances, revealed his struggles with insecurity, particularly recalling an early incident when he was unexpectedly required to film a scene shirtless.

“Early in my career, I had to do a shirtless scene in one of my first films. They didn’t have it in the original script and just a week before the shoot, they informed me I’d be taking my shirt off,” he explained during an interview on the Happy Place podcast. “I panicked thinking, ‘Oh no, I haven’t been hitting the gym, what do I do?’ It felt like a daunting way to introduce myself to the audience.”

Claflin went on to share, “I’m full of insecurities. I recently attended a film screening I acted in, and when asked how it went afterwards, all I could say was ‘I hated it.’ I just can’t stand seeing my own face on screen.”

Claflin spoke to The Telegraph last year about how he developed a kind of body dysmorphia after his big-screen debut as Philip Swift in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides back in 2011.

He discussed the pressures of Hollywood aesthetics, stating, “There’s this belief in Hollywood that it’s the men with six-packs who sell the movie. There was definitely a pressure to fit that mold,” Claflin admitted.
