‘Extra’ Sees Layoffs Ahead Of Season 32

The popular daytime TV show Extra, known for its 30-minute format, has recently dismissed several staff members as it gears up for its 32nd season, as confirmed by Deadline.

This staffing change comes from an annual review that evaluates the team structure and production strategies, emphasizing that the layoffs were not due to staff performance. As Extra moves forward into its next phase, the show is being refreshed with a new host and a new visual style to attract more viewers. The exact number of employees affected by this decision has not been disclosed.

This news arrives two months after the announcement from Billy Bush that he would be leaving the well-established syndicated entertainment news series.

“After five incredible years at the helm of Extra, I am moving on to expand my digital platform, Hot Mics,” Bush explained on his Hot Mics podcast. “This show has seen tremendous growth recently, and I’ve never felt more driven and inspired in my career. Extra has become a cultural icon. I could have made a fortune if I got a dollar every time someone shouted ‘Extra! Extra!’ at me in an airport or on the street. I would be able to buy Warner Bros.”

For the upcoming Season 32, Extra will be under the leadership of executive producer and showrunner Jeremy Spiegel.

As the second longest-running entertainment news magazine in syndication, Extra has earned 12 consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Entertainment News Program, winning the award in 2014 and again in 2016.

Extra was officially renewed for its 32nd season in March by Fox Television Stations, which has served as the program’s primary station group for the last six seasons. The show is produced by Telepictures in collaboration with Warner Bros Unscripted Television and distributed by Warner Bros Domestic Television Distribution.
