I recently asked several chefs to name their preferred brand of store-bought burger buns, and they unanimously chose a brand I too find superior. However, during a recent trip to Trader Joe’s, I spotted their house brand potato buns that were $1.50 cheaper than the chef-recommended ones. Intrigued, I decided to try them.

My Genuine Thoughts on Trader Joe’s Potato Buns

I put the buns to the test in three different scenarios. First, I used them for a breakfast sandwich, toasting the buns lightly before buttering and loading them up with sriracha mayo, avocado, ham, cheddar, a fried egg, and fresh arugula.

Next, I crafted a grilled chicken sandwich, again starting with lightly toasted buns, then piling on grilled chicken, lettuce, a special sauce, and plenty of pickles. Lastly, I made smash burgers, buttering the buns on the flattop and using them to sandwich a double cheeseburger with caramelized onions.

In every test, the buns performed admirably. I even left a chicken sandwich wrapped in foil for over an hour to see how well the bun maintained its integrity against moisture, and it held up perfectly.

The buns are delightfully fluffy, resembling something between a brioche and a traditional potato bun. They’re not too soft or too rigid, maintaining their shape under pressure but not collapsing during eating.

It’s worth noting that these buns are slightly smaller than some might prefer for a hefty burger, but they are perfect for a less tidy sandwich. They also don’t have much flavor on their own, which I think makes them excellent for absorbing other flavors like sauces and toppings.

Ultimately, these buns are a fantastic, cost-effective option for anyone who frequents Trader Joe’s. I definitely plan on stocking up on them for all my upcoming summer barbecues!
