Family gatherings at my parents’ or grandparents’ home were always marked by an abundance of dishes. Ham, in its honey-glazed or country varieties, was a staple, and turkey was a must-have during Thanksgiving. The spread included a variety of vegetable sides, a hefty serving of carbs (think mashed and sweet potatoes, stuffing), and a surplus of desserts that seemed excessive after such a large feast.
A guaranteed presence at every holiday feast—and indeed at every family meal—was some form of bread. While regular Sunday dinners might feature hot cornbread or freshly baked biscuits, holiday meals were a time for rolls. These weren’t just any rolls; they were buttery, yeasty, and straight out of the oven.
My mother tried making homemade rolls for Thanksgiving several times, and while they turned out wonderfully, she eventually conceded, “Sometimes you just can’t manage everything.” She found a solution in Sister Schubert’s rolls, which allowed her to simplify the cooking process without sacrificing quality. “If you can’t handle everything, let Sister Schubert help with the rolls,” she’d say.
Our Enduring Love for Sister Schubert’s Rolls
I recently called my mom to chat about rolls. I have fond memories of enjoying warm Sister Schubert’s yeast rolls at the family dining table. They come packaged in an aluminum tin and can be baked straight from the freezer. They come out of the oven with a heavenly bread aroma and perfectly golden tops. I couldn’t resist slathering them with butter and devouring them immediately.
My mom detailed why these rolls became a family favorite: “During Thanksgiving and Christmas, when there’s so much going on, sometimes you just can’t make rolls from scratch. These taste just like homemade.”
It seems my grandmother first found them in a grocery store about three decades ago. They quickly became a household essential, reserved for when enough family members were around to justify warming up a batch. They’re even great as leftovers, perfect for sandwiching slices of leftover ham.
This family tradition continues robustly. My mom recalls numerous meal planning discussions with her sister (my aunt), where they divvy up the cooking responsibilities. Almost invariably, my aunt exclaims, “And I’ve got a pack of Sister Schubert’s rolls in the freezer!”
If the idea of baking homemade rolls for Thanksgiving is too daunting this year, don’t worry. Delegate that task to Sister Schubert, and focus on more critical aspects of your meal. As my aunt often says, “It’s always good to have some on hand in your freezer—you never know when you’ll need them!”
