On April 19, CM Punk reached a significant landmark in his wrestling career by headlining WWE and Netflix’s WrestleMania 41. He competed against both Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in a thrilling match. Despite not claiming victory, largely due to an unexpected betrayal by Paul Heyman, Punk demonstrated formidable resilience and capability against two of the younger talents in the industry, promising a strong comeback.
The next morning, I caught up with Punk, whose real name is Phillip Jack Brooks, in a large conference area repurposed as a training facility for the event. The space, which hosted two large practice rings during the lead-up to WrestleMania, was now bare. Despite his exhaustion, Punk was upbeat as he entered, evoking the image of the enthusiastic crowd that had cheered him on the previous night.
Our first brief encounter occurred when Raw premiered on Netflix early in January. We never really spoke until after the event, during which he generously shared a donut from Randy’s during his Q&A, a moment that gained some traction online. WrestleMania 41 brought us back together, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into the life of one of WWE’s biggest stars outside the ring.

DEADLINE: The energy from the WrestleMania audience was intense as you entered the arena. Can you share what was on your mind at that moment?
CM PUNK: It felt surreal, like a dream. I remember the walk, the music by Living Colour, but it’s all a blur of noise and excitement. It’s a childhood dream unfolding, and I was trying to savor every second, despite everything moving so fast. Before I step out, I take a moment alone backstage to center myself. But once the camera is on, it’s all action.
DEADLINE: With the rush of the event and all the stimulation, how do you find calm afterward?
PUNK: I’m quite introverted, which surprises many. For every hour I spend in a public setting, I need twice that to myself. After sharing such intense moments with a huge crowd, I retreat. Post-event, I prefer quiet gatherings. I ended the night back at the hotel with close friends, just relaxing and unwinding—it’s how I recharge.
DEADLINE: Today’s a day off, yet here you are, ready to meet fans. Why is this interaction so important to you?
PUNK: Engaging with fans, signing autographs, and taking photos—it’s all incredibly rewarding yet exhausting. I strive to make each interaction meaningful rather than just a quick exchange. It’s about respecting the support and love they show, even though it can be overwhelming at times.

DEADLINE: Facing two opponents with a history, how do you prepare for such a match?
PUNK: Confidence is key—I believe in my skills and that mindset of being the best fuels me. My goal is to outperform and prove my dominance, especially against familiar faces.
DEADLINE: The focus seemed to be heavily on your showdown with Roman Reigns. Was this planned?
PUNK: It’s a fresh dynamic. Fans have seen me against Seth, and Roman against Seth, but Roman and I bring something new. He’s been leading since I stepped away, and I wanted to remind everyone of my rightful place at the top.
DEADLINE: Chairs were incorporated into the match. How did this impact the competition?
PUNK: It definitely changed the game. Feeling the effects the next day reminds you of the match’s intensity. Roman’s got some payback coming for that chair hit!
DEADLINE: Between the physical impact of the chair and Paul Heyman’s betrayal, which hurt more?
