Urgent Recall: Popular Ice Cream at Walmart, Dollar Tree Contains Hidden Allergens

This July has been a challenging month for ice cream safety. Following a separate listeria recall, Tropicale Foods initiated a recall of numerous products under its Helados Mexico and La Michoacana brands.

The recall impacts frozen desserts available at Walmart across all U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and at Dollar Tree outlets. There’s a possibility that products sold at other retailers are affected, although this is still under investigation.

Reason Behind the Recall

Tropicale Foods issued a recall for its frozen products because the packaging failed to disclose the presence of milk.

Given that milk is one of the top eight allergens responsible for 90% of food allergies, this oversight could pose significant health risks. Already, one customer has reported getting sick from this undisclosed allergen.

An internal review of their product labels by the company revealed 14 items that contained cream but failed to list milk as an allergen.

Such a labeling mistake can be extremely problematic for individuals allergic, intolerant, or sensitive to milk.

Identifying the Recalled Ice Cream

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has released a list of the specific products, UPCs, and expiration dates involved in the recall.

Handling the Recalled Ice Cream

If you or someone in your household has a dairy allergy or lactose intolerance, you should dispose of any of the recalled La Michoacana or Helados Mexico products.
