If you’ve recently loaded up on salmon for some quick dinner solutions, it might be a good idea to take a look at your freezer stash.

Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. is issuing a recall for its Wellsley Farms Atlantic Salmon due to a listeria detection by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. The FDA discovered the listeria in a random sample of the frozen salmon. This product was available for purchase at BJ’s Warehouse Club outlets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between January 31 and February 7, 2026.

It’s important to know how to handle this situation if you’ve bought the contaminated salmon.

What to Do with the Recalled Product

According to the Cleveland Clinic, listeria can only be killed by cooking the food to an internal temperature of 165°F. However, salmon is typically cooked to only about 130°F, which is not sufficient to destroy listeria.

If you find this product in your home, do not consume it. You can either return it to any BJ’s Wholesale Club for a full refund or dispose of it safely. For information about refunds, BJ’s can be contacted at 1-888-628-0730.

The Seriousness of Listeria Contamination

Listeria-contaminated food might not show any signs of spoilage such as an off smell or appearance, yet it can still be harmful. Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle aches after consuming food contaminated with listeria.

The risks are considerably higher for pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems. These groups may face severe complications like miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or even life-threatening conditions. If you’ve consumed this product and experience any symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention and inform your healthcare provider about the potential exposure to listeria.
