WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Copenhagen Test, Season 1
The Copenhagen Test delivers an intense eight-episode season that tackles current social issues within the framework of an exhilarating espionage narrative.
Creator Thomas Brandon shared with Deadline how the sci-fi mystery of the series brought to light “some peculiar issues regarding consent,” particularly concerning its main character, intelligence officer Alexander Hale (played by Simu Liu). Alexander’s consciousness is invaded by a shadowy adversary, who uses the acquired information to target his clandestine agency, known as The Orphanage.
Brandon pointed out a particular scene: “There was a shower scene at the end of the pilot which symbolized his commitment to the mission. He begins to undress for the shower… and suddenly, he pauses and looks down.”

While The Orphanage maintains the breach in his privacy, Alexander resigns himself to the fact that his life is under constant watch by both his enemies and his superiors. He reluctantly pairs up with fellow agent Michelle (Melissa Barrera) to pose as an unsuspecting couple while undercover.
Brandon elaborated on the omitted scene, “It was slightly too humorous for the pilot’s conclusion, but it hinted at a broader thematic question of personal sacrifice for one’s nation.”

Drawing parallels with the unease of The Truman Show (1998), the appeal of The Copenhagen Test lies in the ambiguity of who is privy to the truth and who isn’t.
As the plot thickens around the enigma of Alexander’s mental intrusion, it also delves into the backgrounds and motivations of the characters, including the creators of The Orphanage. Is there a prequel or a second season on the horizon?
“We’ve considered it, but for now, they remain just ideas,” Brandon remarked. “However, the show was always intended to continue, so we have several concepts and aspirations for what a second season might entail.”
