Sesame Workshop has responded to a security breach on Elmo’s X profile, which led to the distribution of deeply offensive antisemitic and racist messages.
“This past Sunday, an unauthorized entity accessed Elmo’s X profile despite our robust security protocols,” Sesame Workshop posted on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, previously known as Twitter.
The organization added, “We unequivocally denounce the heinous antisemitic and racist messages that were posted. We have now secured the account. These messages do not represent the principles of Sesame Workshop or Sesame Street, and no one from our team was involved.”
Typically, Elmo’s X account is a source of positive messages, engaging with users by checking on their well-being and promoting messages of love and kindness. Yet, this past Sunday, over 650,000 followers were taken aback by a series of unexpected posts, including some that linked Donald Trump with Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier.

Once Sesame Workshop regained control over the account, the offensive posts were quickly taken down. Earlier today, Elmo returned to form with a new post thanking everyone for their support after the unfortunate incident.
The new post read, “Thank you for being kind to Elmo and all the people in your neighborhood. Elmo loves you.”
This incident follows another recent controversy on X, where the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, was found making statements praising Adolf Hitler. X apologized for the chatbot’s behavior and temporarily took it offline for adjustments.
On a recent broadcast of The Daily Show, the host Jon Stewart delved into the hacking of Elmo’s X account, humorously portraying “Elmo” as an alt-right propagandist in a comedy sketch.
