Why You Should Try This
• Infusing melted butter with Sriracha chili sauce transforms ordinary popcorn into a snack bursting with umami, garlic, and a tangy, spicy kick.
• Mix one tablespoon of Sriracha for every two tablespoons of melted butter.
Typically, I’m happy with just butter and a pinch of sea salt on my popcorn. Occasionally, I crave something spicier, especially since my family, including my ten-year-old, enjoys bold flavors.
I could easily season the popcorn with some chili powder, but I was convinced there must be a superior single-ingredient option. Thus began my quest as a food writer to discover that special ingredient.
I nearly settled for a generic spicy popcorn seasoning when I stumbled upon an interview with Nick Jonas by US Weekly. Jonas shared, “I love Sriracha popcorn,” mentioning he only starts eating it at the movies after the film begins, not during the previews.
How had I, with my Vietnamese roots, not thought of Sriracha sooner? This staple sauce, made from fermented chili paste, has been a favorite for its savory, garlicky, tangy, and spicy flavor profile. Combined with butter, it seemed like the ideal single-ingredient enhancement for the classic cinema snack. I quickly grabbed a bottle from my pantry and got to work.

Crafting Nick Jonas’s Sriracha Popcorn
To whip up Jonas’s savory Sriracha popcorn, you just need three simple ingredients: popcorn, unsalted butter, and Sriracha.
Start by popping your popcorn as you normally would, whether on the stove or in the microwave. Next, melt the butter and blend in the Sriracha. A reliable mixture ratio is two parts butter to one part Sriracha. Taste the mixture and tweak it to suit your preference.
If it’s too hot, add more butter. If it’s not spicy enough, mix in more Sriracha. Then pour this blend over your popcorn and toss it thoroughly to coat with the spicy, flavorful butter.
Enhancing Nick Jonas’s Spicy Popcorn
Inspired by my Vietnamese heritage and the flavors I love in pho, I added a bit of hoisin sauce to the Sriracha and butter mix for a touch of sweetness. If you prefer a sweeter taste, consider adding a bit of honey or maple syrup.
A dash of lime juice also enhances the popcorn, adding a fresh zest that complements the Sriracha’s flavors. Imagine popcorn that hints at the taste of pho—absolutely delightful.
For an extra gourmet touch, consider browning the butter if you’re using a significant amount, like at least a quarter cup. It introduces an additional layer of depth and flavor.
There’s something special about warm, buttery popcorn at the movies, but add a splash of Sriracha, and it elevates it to a whole new level of memorable—a new family favorite.
