According to a Reuters report, Meta is set to allocate between $60 billion and $65 billion in 2025 towards enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and other technological infrastructure. This planned investment is a noticeable increase from its anticipated expenditure of $38 billion to $40 billion in 2024, as stated in a Facebook post by Mark Zuckerberg. The strategy is aimed at reinforcing Meta’s standing in the competitive AI landscape, where it faces competitors such as Google, Microsoft, and Open AI. However, Meta’s investment still falls short of Microsoft’s projected $80 billion.
Part of Meta’s ambitious investment plan includes the construction of a 2GW data center, which will utilize roughly 1.3 million Nvidia [likely H100] GPUs. The expenditure is also expected to cover the costs of custom data center-grade processors designed by the company, though this is currently speculative.
“This year, we plan to invest $60 billion to $65 billion in capital expenditures while also significantly expanding our AI teams. We have the financial resources to sustain our investments in the upcoming years,” Zuckerberg announced in a Facebook post. “This substantial endeavor will propel our main products and business, foster unprecedented innovation, and strengthen America’s leadership in technology.”
The investment announcement emerges in a context of intensifying rivalry in AI funding. For fiscal year 2025, Microsoft has earmarked $80 billion for data centers, Amazon is projected to spend over $75 billion, and along with SoftBank and Oracle, OpenAI has pledged $500 billion to their Stargate project (though the source of these funds is yet to be confirmed). Reuters highlights that these figures greatly exceed the $50.25 billion analysts predicted for Meta’s 2025 capital expenditures.
“2025 will be a pivotal year for AI. I anticipate that Meta AI will become the premier assistant for over one billion people, Llama 4 will emerge as the leading state-of-the-art model, and we will develop an AI engineer that will increasingly contribute code to our R&D efforts,” Zuckerberg shared.
Unlike its competitors, Meta provides the public in the U.S. with open access to its Llama AI models, which it reportedly integrates with its main business, Facebook, for monetization. Meta has also expanded its AI product lineup with innovations like the Ray-Ban smart glasses. By 2025, Meta anticipates its AI assistant will serve over 1 billion users, a significant rise from the 600 million monthly active users reported last year.
