Meatballs (Crave): Robbie G.K. on Why Taking Big Swings Paid Off

Heated Rivalry breakout Robbie G.K. says he expects his forthcoming comedy series Meatballs to build on the growing enthusiasm for Canadian storytelling.

Speaking at MIPCOM in Cannes alongside his Meatballs co-star Maddie Phillips, G.K. applauded platforms like Crave for greenlighting bold, experimental projects.

Discussing the new take on Ivan Reitman’s Bill Murray-led camp comedy, he noted that the series is a major creative leap and pointed out that, judging by Crave’s recent slate, taking big risks can pay off.

When Deadline asked G.K. (who portrays Dale) and Phillips about the tone of Meatballs — billed as a “raunchy, irreverent reimagining of the beloved 1979 Canadian comedy classic” — the conversation turned to whether a sex-forward comedy would land with audiences after a stretch in which comedy hasn’t always aimed purely for laughs.

G.K. said the comedic mood has swung back and that the show’s mockumentary format supplies a lot of the humor. He explained that comedy trends move like a pendulum, and now there’s room again for brash, laugh-first material. Because the cast covers such a wide range of personalities and the jokes target different characters at different times, he believes viewers of varied tastes will find something that connects.

Phillips, who plays the lead Skipper, described filming as feeling like “a bunch of theater kids at an improv class,” with the cast freely leaning into their instincts and pushing scenes playfully.

The Gen V alum said she deliberately avoided imitating Murray’s Tripper. She called Murray an icon and said she wanted to stay true to her own approach rather than try to echo his performance.

She added that any similarity lies in a balance of seeming indifferent while actually caring, and that quality was written clearly into her character.

Meatballs follows the duo as camp counselors who continually make poor choices at a struggling summer camp. The logline explains that with some effort and a laid-back vibe, the place could still become the best spot on earth for 200 fortunate kids — or at least the perfect backdrop for counselors who treat it as their home away from home.

Canadian companies Blink49 Studios and Incendo are producing Meatballs, which also features Mollie Guest, Jordan Kronis, Molly Lewis, Krista Nazaire, Markus McNamara, and Lachlan Quarmby, with guest appearances from Park, Ash and Mae Martin. Jeff Detsky and Wendy Litner serve as showrunners, and Sphere Abacus — the distribution arm of Crave parent Bell Media — is handling sales at Cannes.

‘Heated Rivalry’ impact

The series arrives in the wake of the breakout success of Crave and HBO’s hockey drama Heated Rivalry, which helped shine a spotlight on Canadian projects and features actors such as Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, G.K. and Sophie Nélisse. G.K. pointed to recent momentum for Canadian content, noting other buzzy titles like Netflix’s North of North and the forthcoming Hudson Williams project Yaga have contributed to the conversation.

He said that while multiple films and series over time have opened doors, the international visibility of Heated Rivalry has made him especially aware that audiences are hungry for fresh voices and settings. He argued Canada continues to prove it can deliver across the board. According to G.K., Meatballs taps into Canadian quirks and charm — elements domestic viewers will recognize — while also offering an appeal to viewers abroad who may have been introduced to Canadian storytelling through hits like Heated Rivalry. He called himself fortunate to be part of what he described as a growing wave of attention for Canadian productions.
