Gwen Farrell Adair Dies: ‘M*A*S*H’ Actress Was 94

Gwen Farrell Adair, celebrated for her recurring role as a nurse on the iconic television show M*A*S*H, has passed away at the age of 94.

Her son disclosed that she died due to natural causes this past Thursday in Sherman Oaks.

A native of Austin, Texas, Farrell first appeared on screen in 1972 during the second episode of M*A*S*H, a CBS military comedy-drama. She remained with the series throughout its 11-year duration, which ended in 1983.

Throughout her tenure on M*A*S*H, she portrayed several characters, including Nurses Gwen, Wilson, Butler, and Able, in addition to an anesthesiologist.

In addition to her role on M*A*S*H, Farrell appeared in a 1975 episode of Starsky & Hutch and had roles in various films including Black Gunn (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Coffy (1973), Earthquake (1974), Towering Inferno (1974), and Billy Jack Goes to Washington (1977). She was married to LAPD Detective Frank Adair.

Beyond her acting career, in the 1970s, Farrell ventured into sports management, specifically managing boxers in Los Angeles and broke new ground by becoming the first female licensed boxing referee in 1979. She also managed a Fatburger franchise, a business originally founded by her mother Lovie Yancey in 1947.

“More than her impressive achievements, Gwen was a cornerstone within our family,” stated Farrell’s relatives in a GoFundMe page set up to cover her funeral costs. “She was a beloved grandmother, a beacon of guidance, and a fountain of love and wisdom. Her presence had a unique way of making everyone feel valued, understood, and nurtured, without ever seeking any accolades.”

The family further added, “Her absence creates an immeasurable void in our hearts, a space that cannot be easily filled. We will sorely miss her voice, her resilience, and the soothing presence she brought into our lives. While we grieve her loss, we also celebrate the rich legacy she leaves behind and the incredible life she lived.”
