Leanne Morgan Schools LA Writers on Southern Charm: “They Live in a Bubble!”

Leanne Morgan is celebrating the release of the second season of her self-titled show on Netflix, commending her writing team for their authentic portrayal of her Southern roots.

The lead of Leanne opened up about her initial concerns when moving from Tennessee to Los Angeles to shoot the series. She feared that the creative team might rely on clichéd representations of Southern and religious communities.

“At the beginning, I was really concerned they might not portray us correctly; they might fall into the trap of stereotyping Southerners and Christians,” she shared on The Women of Joy Show.

Morgan added, “It was crucial for me that they get it right because there are so many stereotypes about the South and churchgoers. I had to be patient with the writers, especially since many of them didn’t grow up in a church environment. Thankfully, they’ve done a marvelous job.”

Morgan explained that typically, her skilled writers would craft an episode’s script, which she would then adjust to better reflect her true Southern speech. “I make changes to make it sound like how we really talk. For instance, we say, ‘We use Dukes Mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip.’ It’s the little details that matter,” she remarked.

“They’re incredibly supportive of me since the show is based on my stand-up routine,” Morgan continued. “I have a lot of freedom, being an executive producer, and they respect that greatly.”

Later in her discussion, Morgan emphasized that there is a significant gap in Hollywood for Christian-based entertainment, which often gets overshadowed by more provocative content.

“Truthfully, I believe there’s a huge audience out there that isn’t interested in the overly sexualized content Hollywood pushes. They seem to live in their own bubble, not realizing that many folks, especially in middle America, prefer something different,” she stated.

In Leanne, viewers watch as the titular character navigates life after her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. The second season is currently streaming on Netflix.
