Previously, I would spark discussions by inquiring about people’s astrological signs. They might be a detail-oriented Virgo, a proactive Aries, or a harmonious Libra. However, following a recent segment on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, I’ve decided to switch it up and ask about their favorite sandwich instead.
Chances are, you’re now thinking about your own preferred sandwich. It’s a piece of who we are, shaped by significant influences in our lives. I have fond memories of the delicious tuna salad sandwiches my mom used to make, which will forever be a source of comfort for me.
During last night’s show, when Stephen Colbert asked Julia Roberts about her favorite sandwich, the response was unexpected.

What Is Julia Roberts’ Favorite Sandwich?
“The ultimate sandwich from my childhood that everyone will probably dislike—but then I grew up,” she began. I was instantly captivated. Before we became fond of tuna salad, my brother and I often asked for just mayonnaise on a hot dog bun. Was Julia also a fan of this quirky mayo sandwich?
Yet, her childhood favorite contains no mayo: “Peanut butter and jelly with sour cream and onion potato chips crunched up inside it,” she revealed to Colbert. And notably, this was on a slice of wheat bread because white bread would stick to the roof of her mouth. Naturally, I had to give her unique PB&J version a try.
How Does Julia Roberts’ Sandwich Taste?
It had been ages since I last had a PB&J. However, I had all the necessary ingredients, so I picked up a bag of Lay’s Sour Cream & Onion chips to complete the experiment. I only had apricot jelly, though I wished I could have tried it with a classic strawberry or grape jelly. To keep it child-friendly, I didn’t toast the bread.
I’m a big advocate for adding potato chips to sandwiches, and I believe it’s a habit everyone should adopt. However, I was initially doubtful about how the savory chips would mesh with the sweet apricot jelly. Onion is a strong flavor, after all.
But you know what? This unusual sandwich is delicious. The chips add an excellent crunch, the onion surprisingly complements the sweet jelly, and the saltiness of the peanut butter and chips creates a delightful balance. I don’t think Julia Roberts has ever stopped enjoying this sandwich—I know I’ll be making it again, even though it’s not tied to my own childhood.
