My 1-Ingredient Upgrade for Tuna Salad Is Mediterranean-Inspired

I have an incredible one-ingredient tip that will elevate your tuna salad, and I only wish I could claim it as my own invention. Unfortunately, this fantastic combination has its roots in Mediterranean cuisine, specifically from Spain and Italy, where it has been a staple long before I discovered it.

And here it is… the secret is beans. If you’re hesitant, just give me a chance to convince you. At first, I was doubtful too when an Italian friend introduced me to adding a can of beans to this traditional dish. But once I tried it, there was no going back.

Adding beans brings a wonderfully creamy texture that lets you cut down on mayonnaise. I appreciate how beans, as a convenient and economical pantry item, add substance to the salad, making a single can of tuna stretch to feed a whole family.

Incorporating Beans into Your Tuna Salad

Don’t just use any beans—leave those pinto and kidney beans for your chili recipes. Instead, choose white beans for their mild flavor which blends seamlessly with other ingredients in your salad. While Great Northern and navy beans are decent choices, the soft and creamy texture of cannellini beans make them my top pick for tuna salads.

To incorporate this tweak, just follow your usual tuna salad recipe, then mix in 1/2 cup of beans for every 5 ounces of tuna, stirring gently to maintain the salad’s texture. Since beans add their own creaminess, try a taste test before mixing in the full amount of dressing.

Having experimented with cannellini beans in everything from mayo-rich, deli-style tuna salad to lighter, olive oil-based Italian versions, I can confidently say this bean addition works with virtually all tuna salad variations.

On hectic days, I opt for a simple mix of olive oil-packed tuna and cannellini beans, tossed with chopped onion, lemon juice, and a dash of salt. When I have more time, I incorporate the beans into a more traditional tuna salad and enjoy it with saltine crackers. No matter which recipe you choose, this is an upgrade you’ll definitely want to try.
