John Oliver Censures Trump Administration’s Caribbean Boat Strikes: “I’ve Watched Enough ‘JAG’ To Know The Typical Approach”

John Oliver made a comeback on Last Week Tonight to sharply criticize several actions by President Donald Trump’s administration, which include the razing of the East Wing of the White House and ongoing naval attacks in the Caribbean Sea.

The evening show host talked about Trump’s proposal to construct a 90,000 square foot ballroom, a project estimated at $300 million and supposedly funded by private contributions. Oliver described the design of the ballroom as resembling “a medical spa at Versailles.”

“Destroying the White House, a metaphor that is perhaps too literal,” he commented.

Oliver also criticized the continuous military operations targeting ships that the administration claims are smuggling narcotics into the U.S., which have resulted in over eight such strikes killing more than 40 individuals.

“The government hasn’t shown any public proof of these allegations, but even if it did, my extensive viewing of JAG tells me the usual procedure is to board these drug-laden boats and arrest those involved, not indiscriminately kill them without any legal process,” Oliver pointed out.

Oliver further highlighted a statement by Trump, where he told reporters he’s thinking about initiating land assaults similar to those at sea in Venezuela. Trump mentioned he would proceed without seeking a war declaration from Congress, stating, “We’re just gonna kill people. They’re going to be, like, dead.”

“This is the kind of eerie declaration you’d expect from a horror movie villain, or the brains behind Panera Bread’s overpriced lemonade,” Oliver quipped.

Reflecting on an earlier segment about the recently released, scandal-plagued former Congressman George Santos who made an odd video at an IHOP, Oliver mentioned Trump has “taken on the roles of judge, jury, and executioner over foreign nationals, and it’s exasperating that neither Congress nor the judiciary are stepping in to intervene, given our country’s foundation on the principle of checks and balances. And to borrow a line from IHOP’s latest spokesperson, ‘Where is my damn check?’”
