As CBS News enters a new era under the ownership of Paramount, John Oliver expresses concern over recent executive decisions.
Following David Ellison’s acquisition and his decision to appoint Bari Weiss as the editor-in-chief of CBS News, the host of Last Week Tonight criticized her controversial op-ed contributions to The New York Times and her own publication, The Free Press. Oliver also highlighted her well-known opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
“Honestly, we wouldn’t have even touched this topic if it weren’t for the fact that Bari Weiss was recently named as the head of CBS News, which really changes things,” Oliver remarked during his show. “There are countless media outlets that lean heavily on personal opinions, spanning from left to right, each with varying levels of journalistic integrity.

“Our program, among other things, serves as a platform for opinions, and although our team dedicates significant effort to researching and verifying facts before and after our broadcasts, we are not a news organization. And I would be wary of anyone from a purely opinion-driven background heading a major news network, even if their views aligned with mine,” explained Oliver.
Oliver went on to say, “It is particularly disconcerting to see someone with a track record of producing work that is, in my opinion, at best irresponsible and at worst downright deceptive, taking on such a role.”
Oliver also noted his unease about Ellison’s potential bid to acquire CNN and HBO as part of a possible merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, which may not bode well for his own show. “However, if Ellison appreciates Weiss because she pushes him into difficult discussions and out of comfort zones, perhaps he might appreciate this critique too,” he added.
Last week, Deadline reported that Paramount has acquired The Free Press and appointed its founder as the new leader of CBS News.

She lacks the necessary experience to either run a newsroom or manage a news organization effectively. We are witnessing an era dominated by executives who are out of their depth.
